Chapter Twelve
It had been a week since he’d gotten back from the wedding cruise, and Coop felt antsy. He had his work…the gift he had been working on for his sister and brother-in-law was almost complete, and he’d probably take a trip up to New York City to deliver it to them. But in the meantime, he had to finish it, and then there were the calls he needed to make regarding the space he was looking at for the gallery he was working to open. He had spoken to a realtor before he went on the cruise about finding him a suitable place for an art gallery and shop, and he needed to find out what she had found for him.
Maybe he needed to get out of the house. He hadn’t been out to do more than empty his mailbox since he got back. He ran on the treadmill in his exercise room and swam in the pool in his backyard to keep in shape and get in some daily exercise. But now he was feeling stir crazy, and having feelings of longing that he didn’t understand. He and Nic were planning to meet for dinner in Hyde Park Village in a couple of days, and then Nic would be gone, and he’d be alone again.
Not that he hadn’t been alone before, including this whole week, but somehow Nic’s returning to his ship felt worse than the day they had disembarked and all said their farewells. He hated saying goodbye, and he’d have to do it again in another week. Maybe he shouldn’t have agreed to meet with Nic. But he hadn’t thought he would feel this bummed about him leaving. He sighed, rinsing out the paint brushes and covering the almost finished painting of the happy couple.
After a quick shower, he decided he’d go for a walk on the beach. He loved the ocean, even though he couldn’t hear it anymore. The memory of the sound lived in him, and watching the waves wash in and out soothed something inside him when he was this distracted. Dressing quickly in cargo shorts and a polo shirt, he jammed a baseball cap on his head, slid his sunglasses over his eyes, and picking up his keys and phone, locked the door to his little house behind him before heading over to the beach.
A few people with whom he’d become acquainted when he had moved here four years ago waved hello and signed a “How are you?” or a “Long time no see” at him. He answered all with smiles and nods but kept walking. He didn’t have the energy for signing, and he didn’t feel like using his cell phone for anything other than pictures. No one else approached him as he slipped his flip flops from his feet and wiggled his toes. He sighed at the feel of the sugar sand between them, and headed into the surf, walking in up to his ankles and then standing there till his feet made little wells as the water rushed in and dug trenches around them.
